Kally: SMSNotify does vibrate and play sound, you are thinking of TaskBar Notifier, BUT the problem with SMSNotify is it can NOT wake up the device so if an SMS is missed for more then the typical 5 minute deep suspend period, it will NOT wake up again to tell you. (if you read the forum article there are some tricks but its NOT great)

For others NOT on firmware 2.0, iLog, Kate, Intelliscreen all have wakeup SMS/email/phone call notification systems but they all want money.

AppStore will NOT have this in the near future because it requires a background daemon running which AppStore does NOT allow.

Finally, as for the Apple Notification Service (via 2.1), this is NOT for waking up the device to tell you you have a SMS. Basically this service allows a server that a developer makes to contact a specific phone to give it a message. Which means your server would have to know that you got a SMS/eMail/Phone call. (at least from the dev-info I have read)
