This is how i create my ringtones

Bring in your song of choice in any mp3, wav or whatever and put it in the music section of itunes

Under playlist i made of a special folder to keep my ringtone projects organized:
Ex: "Ringtones Under-construction" so I do everything there. This way if i mess up anything my original is still in the music folder unharmed for quick grab.

I drag the song from the music folder to the playlist folder.
Once its there, right click on the song and highlight "get info"
Go to options and find the start and stop time of the song you want to use for the ringtone. You can go over 30 seconds but it must be under 40 to sync to the phone.
Once you have the time and are happy hit OK
right click on the song and covert to ACC (important)
When itunes finishes converting it will send the shorter (m4a) version back to the music folder.
I then drag the short song to the desktop of XP
I delete the song from the music folder and my playlist folder since im finished with them.
Right click on the song on the desktop and rename to M4R.
Double click the song and it will open under the ringtones folder and it will put a copy in the itunes ringtones folder.
