Am I going to be hosed ...

Hi,
I recently purchased a 3G iPhone and I just now noticed that the modem firmware is 2.08.01! I have looked all over the net and it appears that I can't change the modem firmware at all. My question is that if the Dev Team does come out with a software unlocking method does that mean I am going to be hosed?
On the website for them they said they have been able to change the baseband to a earlier (beta) version, so does that mean that with this version I have I would still be able to change it as well and possibly unlock the phone?
Any help with this would be nice!
