I'm curious if you ever found out what was going on. Your problem does not fit with any description of a known iPhone virus I've ever read about. On platforms like OSX, *nix, and the iPhone OS it's not that easy to get a virus. You have to actually install/compile code containing the virus but most repositories are careful to screen software before hosting it.

You would not get a virus on the iPhone just be reading a text message. An MMS message possibly, but the iPhone doesn't do MMS :-P
