But sometimes I think back and I wish I joined the Marines because of the pride that follows it, but realistically that shouldnt influence you.

I also reccomend not going Active Duty, join the National Guard.

I have a line number for E-7, so in about six months I will be one of those. I am a Civil Engineer, and I work in the Utilities Career field. Basically that is a plumber, water plant operator, and waste water plant operator.
When we are in the field we do what Pauly Shore did in the movie, in the army now.

EDIT: i posted this:
now adays, the army is merely a support and supply division for the marines. everyone knows that.

marines do all the fighting now. its been that way for a few years.
army guns are only used to protect supply chains and ammo depots.

actual fighting is done by marines.

i was there, i know!

but i was corrected by an old army buddy
turns out, as of the last few years (thanks to iraq) the army has grown as far as infantry is concerned.
alot of marines are saying that depending on the mission, they are being paired with certain army divisions.

seems i was wrong.

also, the eagle scouts means nothing to the military (any more, used to count but now its history) only two ways to "jump" paygrades.
enlist 1-3 friends (and they have to complete bootcamp)
or finish top of yur class in bootcamp.

to the guy that said its not that hard to be a sniper,
you are crazy!
thinkin you will be anything in the military other than infantry is a shot in a million.
you do realize that the percentage of the military that is in any type of special unit is less than a tenth of 1 percent.
thats like winning the lottery, getting bitten by a shark, and struck by lightning in your rectum.
hell even the seals training starts with 250 guys and only 25 finish, then they start 3 years of extra training, of which only 3 of the 25 finish.

to the guy saying he appreciates the military but hates their treatment after serving, i totally agree!
but i do feel the military has become a pawn machine for the rich to play their war games over fossil fuels.

i love these guys for what they do, but i hate the reasones that they have to.

and you kids saying you would pick your service based on the cool uniforms,
OMG!
you do realize, the only times you wear the "cool" uniforms is 1-3 times a year for military ceremonies
or
weddings and funerals. (the same in my book)
otherwise, in war, they all look the same.
plus they arent as much of a tang magnet during wartime as they are during peace time. weird, i know.
seems they love us when we volunteer and hate us when we do our job.
hey, take what you can get! right?

lastly, i hate how people applaud the government for their,
"gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet" approach,
but get mad when their son, daughter, mom, dad, or they themselves are the egg!

That must be a Marine thing cause they dont do that in the AF or the Army. Only way for us to jump paygrades is right at the start Enlisting for 6 years, gets you E-3 after Basic/Techschool(MOS)

yeah i am 29 so it has been over 10 years since enlistment for me.
they were changing it when i got in.
they also gave you e-2 if you had at least 2 years of ROTC, e-3 if you were the ROTC supastar! (king of the dorks)

now, who knows.

i was one of the first to go thru bootcamp with those damn blue cards (in case you felt mentally or physically incapable of carrying on, or you felt mistreated or abused, you pulled out your blue card and were sent to medical)
so gay.

I come from a strong aviation/Air Force family so the choice is only natural for me. But if i wanted to fly helicopters i would probably join the marines.

Dont say "if i wanted to" just cause someone wants to fly or be a pilot, does mean your going to.

Thats such a common misconception, when I first told my friend I was joing the Airforce they would always ask "are you gonna be a pilot" and when I tell people now Im in the AF they ask "are you a pilot" ...... there are so many jobs in AF, only a small percentage actually fly.

your absolutely right.

As a kid who grew up watching my dad spend a good bit of his Air Force career in and out of flight training, as well as a flight instructor himself, im aware of the skills, aptitude and competitiveness it takes to be a military aviator. I know people plan theirs whole lives to fly, and I know just because I come from a line of pilots doesnt make me an inherently good pilot. I was just saying, if i tried for had what i took to fly helicopters in the military, i would go to the marines.

LOL seems the main problem is; a lot of ppl get their info from recruiters, all tho they are not supposed to lie to you, they certainly can allow you to be mislead with things that were implied...

If you are remotely thinking of joining: Definitely talk with someone currently on active duty or a Vet. Ask them their likes and dislikes about the branch they are in and what “job” they think is the best or they would rather have .... There are quite a few obscure “jobs” in the military that could interest you and be a good job to have if you don’t make a career of the military...

BUT! Be advised, that no matter what “job” you take, there is ALWAYS a chance you can end up putting your life on the line for this country...

im in the navy seabees and no the marines are not the first in the seabees are. we go in and build the camps and the bridges and drill the wells etc. Thats the way it has always been. we were first into vietnam to clear the way and build bridges for the marines to get through. look it up. but like its been said before make your own choice each has its pros and cons. btw the airforce does not get paid more. depending on your rank you will get paid the same being an e5 in the navy as and e5 in the other services. and one more thing if your not willing to die then dont join the military.
