How do I change my system font to Georgia?

I tried downloading the Georgia font on the first page and renaming the font files to Helvectiva but got the got spinning wheel of death. To fix I had to SSH into my phone and replace with a backup I made.

Someone please advise!?!?

I'm on a j/b 3G 2.1 FW btw

Well, maybe you can suggest me some fonts you would like. I would definitely try Android's fonts, Droid Sans/Serif/Mono, but they lack some styles and I don't have the time right now to extrapolate something appropriate. I look for maximum legibility but don't mind some coolness factor.

it's Helvetica.ttf and HelveticaBold.ttf

just to be a little more precise for the people that don't get it.

1.You need the standard and bold version of the font you want to replace.
2. When you have those rename them: Helvetica.ttf and HelveticaBold.ttf
3. Back up the Helvetica.ttf and HelveticaBold.ttf from your iphone then overwrite your files in there place.

thanks for being more specific. i was only brief because referring to johnny's post it seems like he knew what he was doing but was misspelling the file name

People, it's not enough to just rename the fonts, these are complex files containing metadata which need to be modified also. Just follow the guide here or the various ones you see on the Net.

The fonts are TTFs, optimized for small size (they lack a lot of info, I guess some crossplatform stuff that Mac OS X does not need). There are two versions, the ones in /System/Fonts (original, unmodified TTFs, with copyright intact) and the ones in /System/Fonts/Cache (optimized for size and minimal info).

Files and font names are mapped in CGFontCache.plist, which is a binary plist; it can be decompiled and edited with various tools; in Windows the easiest way is with Total Commander and T-PoT.

The system seems to accept any font, optimized or not, it's just not aware of it until it's mapped correctly in CGFontCache.plist). You can add fonts which will show up on the various applications (book readers for example) by adding them to that plist.

For the UI and Safari fonts you need some tools to change the internal font names, though. I use FontLab 5 to copy font information from the original fonts. After opening both original and my custom font, I use Copy... from Font Info to sync font names, styles and font identification. Some fonts need slight adjustments to Ascent/Descent values to look OK on the iPhone. Generate, replace originals.

You can also copy/paste only some glyphs from custom to originals.

If the UI crashes, you still have access to the filesystem and can undo anything (if you bothered to make backups, that is; did you?).

Very simple stuff, really. Knock yourselves out.

I'd like to upload my own fonts and would love to learn how to do it myself.

I've just never messed with any font software so I'd rather do it right the first time and not mess it up.

i finally took the time to write the much awaited tutorial describing the process of porting fonts for iPhone.. this is important as iPhone users have many requests for fonts of their choice and as much as i’d like to, i simply don’t have the time to fulfill all these demands..

Plllllease let me know when you get an "iPhone compatible" Droid Sans font... I've been dying to get the Google Android font onto my iPhone to complete the Android theme.
