3g 2.1

This WILL sound like a very newbie question because i am a "very newbie".

so, i've read the previous posts and just have clarifying questions. mine is the 3G with 2.2, locked, unjailbroken.

This 2.2 custom that you are posting - will it change the 2.1 basecode? There are many warnings about upgrading to 2.2 because it changes the basecode.

Assuming i use your file, will i be able to go back to original 2.2 at some point if i choose to?

from the sounds of it, do you think i should be using your 2.2 cfw?

Thanks in advance.
Dan

The 2.2 cfw-stable (for classic iphone) will: unlock and jailbreak your phone.

It will have everything stock iPhone 2.2 has plus it will be unlocked just incase you ever need to use another carrier.
It will also give you access to Cydia which is host to all sorts of third-party apps and themes that are not available in AppStore.

To check your current firmware goto Settings-General-About-Version

Also, on some earlier posts there seems to be some concern about ending up with a unlocked phone when one is on AT&T.

Can someone explain the concern. My phone is on ATT, jailbroken, activated but still locked as I did not need it to be unlocked.

If I install your CFW and my phone is now unlocked, why is that an issue?

Is ATT looking for unlocked phones?

just used the firmware and it worked brilliantly. (i'm in uk on o2 network)

also used it in combination with appbackup and aptbackup which got nearly all my apps back as well. see this link :
AppBackup & AptBackup: All is not lost with these two Apps : iSmashPhone

i used diskaid to back up important stuff via wired connection rather than ssh transfer.its a really useful app (and its free!) DiskAid - Transfer Files betwen your Computer and your iPhone or iPod Touch. Disk Mode for your iPhone and iPod Touch.
It was much faster, the transfer on my network was painful!

Thanks very much for the files and helpful replies in this thread. I really appreciate it.

i went from 2.0.1 and was finebut i'm not sure why it recommended to go from 2.1 or 2.2

EDIT..

Be careful if you have categories installed prior to upgrading to 2.2. see this page for details

im on the original (classic) iphone and its unlocked to firmare 1.0.2 (on uk o2) and im running itunes 7.4.3.1

can i upgrade to the newest 2.2 firmware or is my current firmware to dated to do this?

do i first need to upgrade to the latest itunes, then install the new firmware and then run the unlock,

could some one point me in the right direction please

Here what i did on my 3G (i think the process applys to 2G as well, anyone wanna confirm this!)

downloaded the custom firmware for 3G in this thread. There is a 2g alternative.

Update to latest version of itunes.

Backup up my phone using aptbackup appback up and transfering files via disk aid.

if you use categories on your phone then consider this before going any further, see post above.

launch itunes and connect iphone.

back up the phone in itunes

Hold shift and click restore

choose the custom firmware you downloaded (no need to put iphone in DFU mode)

After Restore, set phone up in itunes as your original phone (some people have to set it up as a new phone, not sure why)

resync all your stuff back on.

I hope this helps.

CFW's will not update your baseband, only when you update your 3G iphone directly thru iTunes that your baseband will be upgraded. but if you already did upgraded with the official 2.2 fw then your baseband is already upgraded there is no reverse for that just yet,.
