I know all about
iControlPad - Add real gaming controls to your iPhone! and their work for creating a controller and I have been in contact with them the past couple of months and they seem to be pushing the controller back further and further. Also after hearing that the Joypad was a hoax I feel that it is necessary that somebody provide another controller for the iPhone/iPod Touch that could provide the users with some things. If there is more competition, the consumer wins.
So I'm currently doing research, preliminary controller design sketches, brainstorming, and BASIC 3D modeling preparation for a controller prototype that I would like to see put into mass production. Here are the goals that I wish to achieve with this controller.
1. Provide the user with all capabilities to play all forms of games on the iPhone/iPod Touch
2. "Future proof" the controller for any future Apple products capable of playing games.
3. Provide the consumer with a reasonably priced product. I'm not looking to make a profit, just cover the time and work I have into it.
4. Open Source. I want to be able to expand and use this hardware to its full potential and move towards expanding the iPhone/iPod touch to the next level of gaming.
I have a close friend that owns a fairly large production plastic CNC milling and design company for mass production of this controller. He works on plastics for Kodak and other sub consulting projects so producing a controller would not be far off for him. I have a reasonable amount of design ideas for the shape and style and layout, but I am more than willing to accept feedback and any design ideas that may be involved. What I am really stuck on is the circuit design, the SDK, and involvement and participation with software developers (aka ZodTTD).
This post is basically to get try to assemble a team of individuals that have broad knowledge in some of these aspects and would want to become more involved with a project of this scale. I have spent hours and hours of time researching circuit design and how to assemble this product starting with a simple connection to a PS controller.
If you are interested or have any ideas to move this project along please PM me about involvement or post your comments/ideas below.
