MPlayer, the multi-OS media player which supports mpeg4, h.264, wmv, mp3, aac, wma, real media, and t-dmb formats, has been ported to iPhone and is now available via the ModMyi.com Cydia source.

Ported by skiman100, MPlayer will read any files in those formats in /private/var/media, and play them back. Combine that with dTunes or the MobileSafari download plugin and video sites, etc - and you've got yourself a pretty solid mobile media device. Mplayer is a great way to boost your iPhone's media abilities.

EDIT:

ok so i threw an mpg at it and it wouldn't play it, and then i threw an avi at it, and its playing it at about 1 frame every 5 seconds.. :/ and at about 15 seconds in, it rebooted my phone... now i'm looking at the original post closer and seeing that maybe it doesn't support those formats... but if it doesn't support mpg and avi... whats the point? **waits for vlc**

nope... it wont play avi.. i tried it too
it wont even go 15seconds.. like 3~4 seconds, then boom..
guess its not supporting avi..

played .avi CSI episode downloaded off the net ok but when you tap the screen to change aspect ratio it does funny things (skipping frames/ scrolling screen effects)

i've been trying some wmvs and none of them work either. Audio works, but no video.

I've been trying it since yesterday (there is a thread I posted on) and I used an avatar avi, it works ok but a little audio sync problem at times, and I created a symlink to the downloads folder and all is good

you mean var/root/media or var/mobile/media

thats why you have to create the folder /private/var/media.......

its not gonna find your videos on var/root/media or var/mobile/media

it has to be private/var/media
and media cannot have a capital M
