Cydia Updates Killed Performance

I updated Cydia a couple days ago, and noticed that the contacts and SMS would lag and hang pretty bad afterwards, so I restored my iphone using itunes to get rid of the updates, and checked it out and it was running fine so I updated again and its back to being slow, and hanging on certain things. I can restore again, but I use FiveIconDock from cydia and I cant stand the notification of cydia updates nagging me about upgrading all the time, I guess my question is, is there a way to disable updates through cydia, and what was the most recent updates for? It seems like Cydia is a resource hog and uses alot of system memory, and space on my HD In my mind it has to, when i go to Mangage>packages I get a huge list of stuff I didn't install. Where did it come from, What is it? and why do I need it? LOL
Im feeling very inquisitive this morning.
Let me know what you think.

I had the lagging as well. When I say lag I mean it took forever to load my SMS when I touched the icon, but texting itself did not suffer. It turned out to be something in Winterboard.

All of the "extra" stuff you see in the Cydia Packages section are dependencies that the programs have to have to run. They do not take up very much space on your hard drive however. It is not like in windows where applications are 100s of megs. Most of your tweaks and themes from Cydia are small.

What is it in Winterboard, any idea? I heard it's good to shut down/restart your iphone once a day, just to keep it "fresh" (lack of better word). That helps with the lag, but doesn't totally get rid of it.

Some days I do experience lag, but I just let it sit there until it's ready to go again.

Winterboard is a theme manager that lets you change themes on your phone that you have downloaded from Cydia or ssh'd into your phone. Winterboard is available in Cydia. From Cydia's homescreen click "Featured Packages" and then scroll down until you see it.

Themeing is the whole reason I pWNED my phone.

ha, sorry, I know that, I use Winterboard. I meant what is causing Winterboard to lag for some people-is it one specific theme?

I am not sure because I had so many tweaks going on. I have purposely been running no themes since yesterday to see if Winterboard was killing my battery too. Once it is fully charged(it is charging now) I am going to start loading the tweaks I had to see which one causes the lag. It is something in Winterboard for me because as soon as I disabled all of the themeing the lag went away.
