and what do the spoof files actually have to be called, can they be the same as the .m4a only .m4r, like MATSOD.m4a and MATSOD.m4r??? or does it have to be like MATSOD.m4a and MATSODspoof.m4r???
If your on 1.0.2 you can just simply use iBrickr

I have some working like org.m4a and org.m4r with no spoof in it. My plist is the most chaotic mess I've ever seen, but I've got five working now. lol I may try the seven character method now that I have a free moment again. It's definitely worth a shot as I can't make logical sense out of how the phone reads this file. I'm even using an editor that can pick up errors now, and the allegedly valid plist file still has some ringtone entries that won't work. I'm happy to even have one though, just frustrated that I can't figure this out to an absolute certainty.

It seems totally random which ringtones work and which don't. I had 11 ringtones with only 5 working, then I decided to just add the rest (7 more). Now 2 that used to work don't and 2 that didn't work now do.

So now I have 18 ringtones, 5 of which don't work.

Files show up, no play...and i have my phone jailbroken. I can see the ringtones through the iPhoneBrowser and everything, but they won't play on the phone. Guess i'll have to wait for iToner...

Send a message via AIM to skierdb526

would someone with success please copy and paste their plist? I'm looking for anything that looks like a pattern so we can figure this out.

works great except it takes up twice the space so i sync the ringtones and then replace all the m4r's with blank documents and it works!

example i made a holloween ringtone and my files after synced were:

VCEW.m4a
YWHF.m4r

so i deleted the m4r file and then made a new document named it YWHF.m4r and boom worked perfect!!!

I can make a ringtone in about 15 seconds with garageband
Can u upload ur ringtones.plist, as so we can see what it is suppose to look like

awesome

Wow great How to.....
Add a Plist for people to download or copy and paste. Here is mine set up for 4 ring tones. It works great. Had to change file extension to txt for the upload just rename. here is a copy of it. I suggest keeping it simple like this leaving all names to 7 characters and numbered easily. Using a free xml editor helped me to fix a small mistake that was keeping mine from working at first. Also if the ringtones you are adding are pretty long dont worry about the lengths, they will never play to the end anyway.

If you need more info i can post here. Sorry, I'm a newbie and would love to have my own ringtone. Thanks alot guys. Here' the playlist I made that itune can't pick up.

hmm...so you guys have this all working somewhat then?

that's interesting. i followed all the steps and suggestions in the tutorial and throughout this discussion and all that happens when i go into settings and hit sounds , is that it crashes back to the homescreen. it's something with my plist, but i can't figure out what it is. can someone take a look at it for me, possibly?

I would imagine it has something do with with this line:

<key>Name></key>

The extra ">" might be causing your issue and it's on every ringtone you have listed.

Woke up, and added another ringtone justs to make sure that the magic did not leave me while I was sleeping. Here is things to look for:

1) if the ringtone.plist is not formatted correctly, forget all ringtones. I use MS XML NOTEPAD to verify the .plist file.

2) Keep all file names to 7 characters.

3) Chmod the ringtone and spoof file to 755. (not sure if this is necessary)

4) Match the ringtone file name exactly (match case) in the ringtone.plist file.

5) Make sure you rename the file BEFORE dragging it into itunes. (not sure if this is necessary)

6) Verify you are always looking at the AAC file in itunes when you get the time. For some reason, the mp3 and acc file times differ.

I can now add a ringtone in about a minute. This info should help the iBrickr dude to get ringtones up on his app. I think a little more research is needed to fine tune the approach.

FYI... if you sync with iTunes these ringtones will disappear. You just have to replace the .plist file to get them back but you will have to do it every time you sync even if you turn off ringtone syncing in iTunes.
