This method is outdated. You can now simply follow the Get Connected guide on the left and then drag and drop the icons into the phone. New guide soon.

First of all I'd like to start out this guide by thanking the people that made this all possible with their programs. Big props to geohot, nightwatch, ziel, and all the other wonderful devs at #iphone on IRC. Now lets get to some skinning. In particular this guide will teach you how to change all the icons on the homescreen of your iPhone using an Intel Mac.

Step One
We need to get all our software together:
Download the iPhone Restore File. If your browser doesnt change the extension on the end of this file from .ipsw to .zip then do it manually.
Grab Jailbreak from HERE or Here.
Get IphoneInterface v 0.3.3 HERE or HERE.
Download the original Services.plist from HERE or HERE

Step Two
Put all the files from the downloads into a folder you have created within your home folder called "phonedmg." Your phonedmg folder should look something like the one below (minus the icons folder, Default_CARRIER_ATT.png, FSO_CARRIER_ATT.png, and Chocolate.m4a. You don't in any way need any of these in there they just happen to be in mine :D)

Step Three
Open up terminal

Step Four
Now is a good time to plug in your iphone. If itunes pops up make sure to close it completely. For the remainder of this tutorial assume that if iTunes pops up you must exit it completely before continuing. Type in "cd phonedmg" into terminal and hit the enter key. Next type in "./Jailbreak" followed by the enter key. Your terminal screen should look like the pictures below:

Step Five
Start your phone in recovery mode (note: keep you iPhone plugged in) by holding the Home and the Sleep/Wake button for a full 25 seconds.

Your iPhone will start in recovery mode and look something like the picture below. If iTunes opens up remember to fully exit before continuing.

now you will see Jailbreak running some more in terminal like the image below. If iTunes opened up you may have to type "ctrl+c" into terminal and then hit enter on your keyboard followed by "./Jailbreak" and the enter key again.

Step Six
After your phone has restarted type "./IphoneInterface" Remember if iTunes opened up to close it fully first.

Image:Icons7.png

Step Seven
Now comes the tricky bit. I have found the icons for the homescreen for you. You must first create your own icon set or you can use mine. I believe the icons are 64x64 but i made mine a little bit smaller at 59x60 and they work fine. These also must be .png images. Here are the locations and names of the 16 icons on your home screen:

/Applications/Calculator.app/icon.png
/Applications/Maps.app/icon.png
/Applications/MobileCal.app/icon.png
/Applications/MobileMail.app/icon.png
/Applications/MobileMusicPlayer.app/icon.png
/Applications/MobileNotes.app/icon.png
/Applications/MobilePhone.app/icon.png
/Applications/MobileSMS.app/icon.png
/Applications/MobileSafari.app/icon.png
/Applications/MobileSlideShow.app/icon-Camera.png
/Applications/MobileSlideShow.app/icon-Photos.png
/Applications/MobileTimer.app/icon.png
/Applications/Preferences.app/icon.png
/Applications/Stocks.app/icon.png
/Applications/Weather.app/icon.png
/Applications/YouTube.app/icon.png

Now to replace all those icons with my custom ones i used a alot of the "cd" and "putfile" commands in IphoneInterface in terminal. Note to load a file it must be in the phonedmg folder that you made earlier. As you can see a lot of the icons are name icon.png. Basically I would cd to a directory, move the correct icon.png file into my phonedmg folder, "putfile icon.png", change directories in terminal again, replace the icon.png in my phonedmg folder with the appropriate folder I was in on the phone, "putfile icon.png", and repeat. To give you a clearer idea of what I was entering in terminal I have included it below. NOTICE the last two steps are "cd /System/Library/Lockdown" followed by the enter key then "putfile Services.plist" then the enter key. This is necessary to make sure your iphone continues to sync with iTunes.

Congrats you are done! Now your iphone has custom icons like mine!!! And yes I know I just turned all the pretty color icons on this incredible screen into black and white. What can I say I'm boring!!! Of course YOU get to decide on your phone. Enjoy! If you have any questions feel free to ask in the Discussion Thread. Also, when you create your own custom iPhone icon packs, be sure to post 'em up in our skinning forum!
