This guide teaches you how to upgrade your jailbroken, unlocked 1.1.4 or previous 1st generation iPhone (not 3G) to a jailbroken, unlocked 1st generation iPhone running the new 2.0 firmware using Pwnage Tool 2.0 by the iPhone Dev Team. ONLY WORKS FOR OS X.

This also works for 1st generation iPhones that were either jailbroken only or not jailbroken at all, or are already on 2.0. This is similar to the 3G method, but is different. For a 3G 2.0 jailbreak guide, click here

Before getting started, you'll need to download a few things:

Alright, now that you've downloaded all that, lets continue.

Connect your 1.1.4 1st gen iPhone to iTunes. You should get a pop-up asking if you'd like to download the 2.0 firmware. Make sure you click Download Only - we don't want to Restore yet. We're gonna stay on 1.1.4 or wtvr you're on.

Note: If you don't get this pop-up for wtvr reason (you've already said no, or you're already on 2.0), you can download the latest 2.0 firmware direct from Apple. This is ONLY for the 1st generation iPhone, NOT the 3G version. If you use this method, place the downloaded .ipsw file in ~/Library/Itunes/Iphone Software Updates in your Mac. If you don't know how to get there, open up Finder, hit Apple+Shift+G, and then paste that address in there and hit Enter. Drag the .ipsw into there.

Note: Safari does not download the .ipsw files correctly - it decompresses them as soon as they're downloaded. We don't want that. Use Firefox to download the .ipsw, not Safari.

iTunes will then ask you a couple questions about downloading the firmware. Hit Next, then Agree.

You will see the Download coming down in iTunes.

I recommend you sync up first so you get your contacts, photos, mail, etc current.

Alright, once you've downloaded the 2.0 firmware and placed it where it goes (whether manually or by having iTunes download it for you) you can open Pwnage Tool by double-clicking the icon.

Hit OK on the Copyright screen that pops up.

Since we're going to be jailbreaking/unlocking our 1st gen iPhone, click that image on the left so the green checkbox comes up, and the hit the blue arrow button in the bottom right to move on.

On the next screen, Pwnage Tool will look for the 2.0 .ipsw file. If you let iTunes download it, or correctly placed it where I told you earlier (~/Library/Itunes/Iphone Software Updates), after about 30 seconds Pwnage Tool should find the .ipsw file and list it in the window. Click it and hit the blue arrow in the bottom right to move on.

In the next page, click Cydia packages, Bootneuter, and Custom logos, and then hit the blue arrow in the bottom right to move on.

Ok, you should now see the Bootneuter settings window. I left it as is. If you don't want to unlock your iPhone, uncheck Unlock baseband. You don't need to update your bootloader unless you're familiar with what that means enough to know you need it. ;) (also, if you do not wish to unlock your iPhone and you are on at&t, o2 ect... go to "General" and uncheck "Activate the phone" as iTunes will be doing the activating, if you want signal that is :P).

In the Cydia settings page, you can just click next (the blue arrow) and move on. At the moment most Cydia packages are not 2.0 compliant, as developers need to tweak the apps to work on the new firmware with the jailbroken devices.

Do make sure the Cydia Installer is checked though.

Note: The default boot logo is cool, but I like this MMi logo for mine. :D You can grab it off this page by right-clicking and selecting Save Image As or whatever your browser calls it to save the image to your desktop.

Alright, now click Build and hit the blue next arrow to move on.

When it asks for the Bootloader v3.9 file, hit No to the web searching, and instead then hit Yes to browse on your comptuer to where you downloaded it earlier.

Do the same thing for the v4.6 bootloader file.

Pwnage Tool will ask you where you want to save your custom .ipsw file to. Default is fine, but if you'd like to rename it and save elsewhere, go for it. No reason to other than your own organization style.

Pwnage Tool will then begin to create your custom iPhone firmware. You'll see the Building IPSW screen for a good 2-3 minutes.

Halfway through the creation of the .ipsw, you'll see a window pop up on your Mac, and a few seconds later OS X will ask you for your password. This is required for Pwnage Tool to build the custom firmware, go ahead and input your password and hit OK.

Pwnage Tool will ask if your iPhone has been previously pwned (and still is). If you aren't sure, just hit No, that's fine. If you know for sure its been pwned and still is, hit Yes, but make sure it really is.

OK, now we need to enter DFU mode to continue.

Simply follow the on-screen instructions to do so. Please do these EXACTLY AS THEY SAY, and WHEN THEY SAY. Timing is important on this step.

Note: If you have any errors with entering DFU mode, open Terminal on your Mac (Applications/Utilities>Terminal.app) and run the following commands (You can just copy/paste straight from here, with a Return/Enter after each line):

 cd ~/
 mkdir "Library/iTunes/Device Support"

then try again.

Assuming you did it right, you will see the success message. Hit OK.

Close Pwnage Tool by either hitting Apple+Q, or quitting from the Pwnage Tool menu in the top left of your Mac's screen.

Now, pull up iTunes. You should see the following message:

Hit OK. Now, this is important - where it says Restore in iTunes, hold down the option key on your keyboard and press Restore in iTunes while holding it down.

Note: Its very important you hold down the option key while pressing Restore. Don't forget that.

Assuming you did that correctly, a window should pop up asking you which .ipsw file you'd like to restore from. Select the one we just created with Pwnage Tool. If you left it default, it should be sitting on your desktop and be named iPhone1,1_2.0_5A347_Custom_Restore.ipsw or something similar. Hit Open.

iTunes will now run through its typical flurry of windows and notifications while updating the firmware.

If everything went correctly, you'll see the window stating your iPhone was restored to factory settings (heh, not quite, iTunes ;), and you can then hit OK.

Wait for iTunes to see the iPhone before disconnecting.

Once the iPhone starts up for the first time, you'll see BootNeuter 2.0 start up and let you know its going to flash the baseband and unlock your phone. This will run for a couple minutes, and then bring you back to the new 2.0 homescreen.

Note: If you didn't choose to unlock your iPhone, you won't see BootNeuter.

If you are on T-Mobile and chose to unlock as well as jailbreak, you'll see the following screen:

If not, you'll see something similar, just with AT&T at the top left. ;) If you'd like, you can now restore from the backup you made of your iPhone before, to get all your contacts, mail accounts, and photos back. You might wanna clear off some photos/videos/music if you had it near full to make room for AppStore and Cydia apps now.

Note: While Cydia itself works great on iPhone 2.0, most of the packages from it (all those apps you love from Installer and Cydia before) need to be tweaked by their developers to work with 2.0. Look for your fav apps to start appearing like crazy over the next few days, but for a bit the pickins may be scarce. ;)

Congrats! That's it! You're now ready to go on iPhone firmware 2.0.
